5 Ways With Potatoes

Wednesday 15th February 2017

Potatoes, potatoes are one of those starchy vegetables that don't have a lot of taste on their own but you can make them delicious with just a few steps. With any of these, you can use either white potatoes or sweet potatoes, either are good. Or you could use a combination of both to add a nice colour variation.

5. Baked
Wash your potatoes then using a fork stab some holes in your whole potatoes, put them on a tray and season with salt and pepper. Add a whole blob of butter onto each potato. Bake in the oven on a tray for about an hour rotating halfway through cooking.
After being baked being careful because they are hot, cut a whole down the middle opening up your potato. Then you can add delicious things like sour cream, bacon, grated cheese, corn, maybe even coleslaw. It's quite good.

4. Chips / Wedges
Starting with either washing or peeling your potatoes. Then cutting them into either chip like fingers or into wedge chunks. On a lightly oiled tray had the potato pieces and sprinkle with some paprika, garlic powder and flaked dried parsley. Bake in the oven for 50 minutes tossing/turning over half way through.

3. Mashed
Peel, cut up into cubes and submerge your potatoes into cold water and bring to the boil then simmer until a fork inserted is soft and cooked through. Drain the water, watching out for the steam. Then add butter and some milk and mash with a fork or wisk or potato masher. Add more milk if a bit smoother consistency is desired. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can also add garlic or other herbs to the water when boiling to add extra flavours to your mashed potato.

2. Roasted
Wash or peel your potatoes, cut into quarters. Put on a lightly oiled baking tray and sprinkle on garlic and dried herbs. I also either use paprika or a bush spice mix I found at the grocery store. Then I put them in a 180 degree oven for 50 minutes tossing around half way through.

1. Salad
To make potato salad you use the previously mention boiling method, but cook them for a less amount of time so the chunks still hold their shape. Drain them and run them under cool water and put to one side. Put a few large spoons of mayonnaise into a bowl, add a little bit of milk (just to thin out the mayonnaise) then add salt and pepper to taste, I also like to add dried parsley flakes and recently I have been adding paprika. Combine all the ingredients then pour over the potatoes and stir to coat being careful not to mash the potato. Allow to cool and enjoy.
