Top Tips for Baby-Sitting

Friday 7 August 2015

I did some babysitting on the weekend and thought I would share with you my top tips. I hope they come in handy in the future. Enjoy it!!
When baby-sitting your younger siblings or even someone elses children, there are a few things that you need to take into concideration.

Tip 1. Plan ahead. Figure out whether you will be looking after them for just a couple hours or the whole day. And if you had previous plans with soeone else, you may need to cancel or change them.
Tip 2. Once that is figured out, its time to plan what you are going to do with the little dears. Depending on the age depends on what activities you can do with them. If its at their own house you are looking after them then its easy you can just let them play with their own toys and join in on their game. If they are old enough you could concider playing some board games. You could even mix it up a bit and make new rules for the way you play with them
Tip 3. If they are someone elses children and you plan to feed them at some point, you must, MUST find out if they have any allergies, or food restrictions due to religeous reasons or anything else. Planning something they can help with it also fun for them. Knowing whats in your food gives you a new look on it.
Tip 4. If you have a small kitten or guinea pig. I suggest hiding them or kepping them in a different room while the children are there if they are at your place. Im not saying all children are guilty but, a lot of smaller children will insist on holding or patting them and they dont know their own strength and squeeze pretty tight and before you know it your kitten or puppy has their eyes bulging out.
Tip 5. Do any last minute cleaning before they arrive you can. Dont leave anything out you dont want them to be touching. If youre at their house watching them, (which a lot of parents prefer) keep it tidy. If you arrive with it tidy then keep it tidy. If yous get all the lego out and play with it, make sure you put it away when you are finished, no one wants to come home to a 1000 lego pieces on the floor to be stepped on in the dark.
Tip 6. Dont. Loose. Your. Temper. Children arent always the easiest to look after, especially if they dont get what they want. And when that happens, the screaming starts and the tears and the foot stomping and anything that will make you change your mind. But, keep calm. As easy as it is to scream and yell along with them, dont. It doesnt help anything. Stay calm and tell them rashionally. If that doesnt work just leave them to scream it out.
Tip 7. Wen looking after small children its best to keep an eye on them at all times. It seems that when ever your eyes, and focus has been taken off of them is when they get into the real trouble. They get into the pump soap in the bathroom and decide to wash the floor with it. And many other things can happen when your eyes are taken off of them.
Tip 8. If while your baby sitting the worst happens and a child falls over and hurts themselves or another sibling injures them, or they are ust upset. Dont offer them a cup cake or anything sweet to fix the problem. Give them hugs and tell them everything is going to be alright, then after they feel better you both can go and have a lolly for being a good sport. Never give food to children to make them feel better, because as they get older they will expect to get food when they are hurting or sad and expect the food to make them feel better, which it wont.
Tip 9. If you are just a big kid at heart (like me), it is much easier to look after children because you really dont mind getting down on the floor, at their level and playing with their games. If its a doll house or barbie dress up. I am more than willing to play it all just to keep the children happy. :)
Tip 10. Sugar. If you are due to drop the children off, or be picked up or getting ready to leave yourself because the parents or gardians are due to be home soon. I have one sneaky trick. Give them a little sugar. It doesnt take much just one or two lollies. You wont get any reaction straight away but when you leave it will hit them and they will go bananas. As great an idea as this is thou, it also has its downside. If they are friends children you are looking after then it shouldnt be that terrible, but if you are babysitting for a job or because you have been refered to by a kind reletive, maybe feeding them sugar isnt the best idea.

This turned out longer than I expected. Oops. When you are babysitting next, I hope this tips will help. Good luck!!
