Top 10 Favourite Greek Gods/Goddesses

Top 10 Favourite Greek Gods & Goddesses

Wednesday 3rd August 2016

Greek Mythology is my all time favourite ancient mythology. It was first brought to my attention through 'Hercules' the Disney movie years ago when I was younger. I then studied it in High School for a project and fell more in love with it. When I found the 'Percy Jackson' book series I was thrilled because it mean I could get my Greek Mythology fix but with a modern twist. I realised with the bit of extra research I did for this, a lot of the goddesses were virgins. Fun facts. Without any more rambling here is my list of Top 10 Favourite Greek Gods, Goddesses and Demi-Gods.

10. Hera.
Queen of the Gods and Goddess of marriage, childbirth and a few others. She is the wife and sister of Zeus. Hera is driven to vengefulness and jealousy with Zeus's many infidelities, even though she is the goddess of marriage. Her sacred animals are the peacock and cuckoo.
9. Hermes.
God of language, communication, trade and writing. He is the messenger of the gods and he leads the souls of the dead into the afterlife. He is known for his herald's wand and winged sandals. His sacred animals include the tortoise.
8. Artemis.
Goddess of the hunt, wilderness, animals, young girls and childbirth. She is a virgin and the daughter of Zeus and twin sister of Apollo. She is known later on as having a bow and arrow. Her sacred animals include deer, bears and wild boars.
7. Apollo.
God of music, arts, knowledge, healing, poetry and archery. he is the son of Zeus and twin brother of Artemis. Both of which use a bow and arrow. Apollo is the embodiment of perfection, which caused his to be cruel and his love affairs never ended well. His sacred animals include swans, hawks, ravens and crows.
6. Aphrodite.
Goddess of beauty, love, desire and pleasure. She was described as an extraordinarily beautiful woman, with poets praising her radiant smile. Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus but she had many lovers, including Ares and Achises. Her sacred animals include sparrows and doves.
5. Hades.
Brother of Zeus and Poseidon. King of the Underworld and the dead. His consort is Persephone. Some stories say she is there against her best wishes. Hades most recognised attribute is his three-headed dog Cerberus. He was one of the three sons of Cronus and Rhea, and therefore was entitled to one of the three realms of the universe, the underworld. His scared animals include the screech owl.
4. Poseidon.
God of the sea, rivers, floods, droughts and earthquakes. Being a son of Cronus and Rhea, and the brother of Zeus and Hades, he was also entitled to one of the three realms of the universe, as king of the sea and the waters. he was drawn as a man with a sturdy build and a luxuriant beard and holding a trident. His sacred animals include the horse and the dolphin.

3. Zeus.
King of the Gods goes to Zeus. God of the sky he controls thunder, lightning, law, order and justice. Basically, he is the boss. he is the youngest of all his siblings. He is married to Hera and fathered three children. Although Zeus was not the most faithful to his wife and fathered many other offsprings including Hercules, Athen, Apollo and the Muses. Some of which became Gods in their own right. Some stories even say he is the result of Aphrodite.

2. Athena.
Goddess of Wisdom, Intelligence and a bunch more. Athena is the patron of the city Athens, Which was named after her. If memory serves me correctly she had to compete against Poseidon to be chosen as the patron of the city. Her symbol is the olive tree because she originated the first one which gave the people of Athens food and olive oil.

1. Hercules.
He had to be my number one. Hercules was a demigod and after being tricked into killing his wife and children he was sentenced to work for Eurystheus for 12 years, and during those 12 years, he had to complete 12 labours. They are now referred to the '12 Labors of Hercules'. We'll touch more on them another time. After all that time Hercules finally became a God. And that my dear friends is why he is my number 1 today.
